FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

I am pregnant, can I still schedule a facial?

Absolutely! Skin can be extra sensitive during pregnancy so we would save the more intensive treatments for after your due date which means no chemical peels, microdermabrasion or retinoids. We would focus on deep cleansing and hydrating facials. You deserve self-care as well!

What type of wax do you use?

We use hard wax which provide quick, efficient results and a less painful waxing experience. Heated at low temperatures to minimize irritation, this wax adheres only to the hair and not the skin itself.

What are chemical peels? Am I eligible for a chemical peel?

Chemical peels can improve many skin issues such as acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and improving skin tone and texture. There are different types of chemical peels from superficial, medium depth and deep peels. Superficial peels offer little to no downtime- which means you’ll leave your appointment and carry on with your regular activities. Medium to deep peels require downtime to 5-10 days due to your face peeling. Peeling or flaking is exfoliating your dead skin and revealing new, healthy skin cells on the surface, which is called cell turnover.

Some people won’t necessarily experience visible peeling. That doesn’t mean your treatment was ineffective. Everyone experiences different levels of peeling, dependent upon skin type, resilience, type of peel and the number of layers applied. Some people will experience ‘sheeting’ when large portions of skin peel off at once. ‘Flaking’ is when small pieces of skin peel off, similar to mild peeling after a sunburn. Others experience exfoliation that is not visible. If you don’t peel, your skin is still exfoliating, it’s just taking place at the cellular level that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Typically, the deeper the peel you receive, the more extensive peeling you will experience.

All chemical peels are customized to your skin type and concern. When chemical peels are applied, you might feel a tingling sensation that will subside after a minute or so. We use a fan to lessen the sensation to make it more comfortable. We gauge the intensity throughout the entire process.

Chemical peels are not for first time clients. All clients must have at least three facial treatments prior to receiving a peel. Skin By Nique will conduct a thorough skin analysis to determine if you are eligible for a chemical peel.

How should I prepare for my facial service?

Please do not do the following:

  • Use Actives, Retinol products 3-5 days prior to your appointment

  • Get waxed on your face 3 days prior to your appointment

  • Go to a tanning salon 72 hours prior to your waxing service

  • Any form of laser treatments 2 weeks before and after

  • For Men: do not shave the day of or day before/after your facial

  • Arrive with an active cold sore or open lesion. Reschedule if you have an outbreak

  • Collagen Fillers less than 2 weeks prior or as instructed by your physician

How should I prepare for my wax service?

  • Drink plenty of water the day of your appointment

  • Gently exfoliate the day before

  • Shower prior to arrival, as it’s best not to shower post wax for at least 4 hours

  • Dress comfortably as skin may be sensitive post wax

  • Avoid using topical prescriptions, active acids, or Retinols on the area being waxed 5 days prior or post service

  • Please disclose any use of new medication, allergies or antibiotics prior to your service

How long does my hair need to be in order to be waxed?

Hair must be at least half an inch long for effective removal, which is a little longer than the length of a grain of rice. This helps ensure that hair is completely removed from the root. Which means no waxing or shaving for the past four weeks.

How do I take care of myself post wax?

You want to avoid saunas, tanning beds, the gym and physical intimacy for at least 24 hours. Avoid tight and constricting clothing for a few days after your wax. Gently exfoliate using an exfoliating glove in circular motions every day and incorporate a cleanser that has an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) like glycolic acid to further assist with exfoliating the area to prevent ingrown hairs.

What happens if I can’t make my appointment?

We understand that things happen, especially things that are out of our control. We ask that you let us know at least 24 hours in advance, but if something happens the day of your appointment please inform us at least 3 hours in advance.

This is my first time getting a facial, what should I expect?

Whether you are scheduled for a facial or wax, you will start by completing a thorough questionnaire. With your facial you receive a complimentary face, neck and decollate massage. Based on your comfortability, you will change into a robe prior to the treatment. We will ask numerous questions about your skin and conduct a skin analysis which allows us to see your skin at a deeper lever which assists us in creating your customizable facial. Once you lay on the treatment bed that is your time to steer the direction of your self-care. If you want to talk, relax and take a nap, or ask questions throughout the process, we are more than happy to follow your lead!
